Why Two 100% Cotton Sheets Can Feel Completely Different

One feels cool and crisp. Another feels smooth and silky. Another is soft and relaxed. Yet every packet can still say 100% Cotton.
So how can sheets made from the same fibre feel so different?
The answer is that 100% cotton tells you what a sheet is made from, but it doesn't tell you the whole story about how that sheet has been made. The cotton itself, the yarn, the weave or knit, the weight of the fabric, the finishing process and even the way the surface has been treated can all influence the final feel.
Cotton is the ingredient.
The construction is the recipe.
Think about cotton in the same way you might think about flour in a recipe. The ingredient may be the same, but what you do with it can create very different results.
First things first: what does 100% cotton actually tell you?
When you see 100% cotton on the label, it tells you the fibre content of the fabric. That's important, but it doesn't tell you whether those cotton yarns have been woven into a crisp percale, woven into a smooth sateen, knitted into jersey or brushed to create warm flannelette.
That's why shopping for sheets purely by fibre content β or purely by thread count β doesn't necessarily tell you what they'll actually feel like when you climb into bed.

IF YOU LOVE CRISP SHEETS
Cotton Percale
Percale uses a traditional plain-weave construction. The result is generally a crisper, fresher feel with a matte appearance rather than a pronounced sheen.
Percale is also known for good breathability, which is one reason it appeals to people who enjoy that fresh, classic sheet sensation. If you love the feeling of getting into a beautifully made bed with clean, crisp sheets, percale may be your cotton personality.
Think: crisp, fresh, breathable and matte.

IF YOU LOVE SMOOTH SHEETS
Cotton Sateen
Sateen uses a different weave structure to percale. Longer sections of yarn are exposed across the fabric surface, helping create its characteristic smooth, silky-like feel and subtle lustre.
This construction also tends to create a fabric that feels more fluid and drapey than crisp percale.
Think: smooth, silky, soft and gently lustrous.

This is perhaps the easiest way to understand why the words 100% cotton don't tell you everything.
Put a cotton percale sheet beside a cotton sateen sheet and both can contain the same type of fibre, but the way the yarns have been constructed into fabric changes the surface, hand, drape and overall sleeping experience.
IF YOU LOVE RELAXED BEDDING
Stonewashed Cotton
Then there is cotton that has been deliberately washed or finished to create a more relaxed surface and handle.
Stonewashed cotton typically has a softer, more casual appearance than a crisp traditional sheet. The slightly relaxed surface is part of its appeal β it isn't trying to look perfectly pressed.
Think: soft, relaxed, casual and lived-in.

Cotton Jersey
Here's another difference many people don't realise: cotton sheets don't even have to be woven.
Jersey is knitted rather than woven. It's a construction most of us already know very well β because it's commonly associated with the soft, flexible feel of a favourite cotton T-shirt.
Think: soft, flexible, comfortable and T-shirt-like.

Cotton Flannelette
Flannelette shows just how dramatically a finishing process can change the experience of cotton.
The fabric surface is brushed, raising fibres and creating the familiar soft, fuzzy handle associated with flannelette. That brushed surface helps give flannelette its characteristic warm and cosy feeling.
Think: brushed, soft, cosy and warm.

Does a higher thread count automatically mean a better sheet?
No.
Thread count measures the number of warp and weft yarns within a square inch of woven fabric. It's useful information, but it is only one part of the construction of a sheet.
Fibre characteristics, yarn quality, yarn size, weave, fabric weight and finishing can all influence the end result. An extremely high thread-count number therefore shouldn't automatically be interpreted as meaning a sheet will feel better to you.
Choose the feel you love β not simply the biggest number on the packet.
What about the cotton itself?
Even before the cotton becomes fabric, there can be differences. Cotton fibres vary in characteristics including their staple length β essentially the length of the individual fibre.
Longer cotton fibres can be spun into finer yarns, which can contribute to producing finer, softer sheeting. But this is another reason we shouldn't judge a sheet from one specification alone.
The cotton fibre matters. So does the yarn. So does the construction. So does the finishing.
And then comes the finishing
Fabric doesn't simply come off a loom or knitting machine and head straight into a packet.
Different finishing processes can modify the surface, softness, appearance and hand of the finished fabric. Brushing is an obvious example in flannelette. Washing and softening processes can create a much more relaxed feel in washed cotton.
That's why two fabrics that started with cotton fibre can end up feeling remarkably different by the time they reach your bed.

There's no single cotton sheet that is automatically right for everyone. The person who loves cool, crisp percale may not want the same feel as someone who loves smooth sateen.
