Why Does Your Fitted Sheet Keep Coming Off the Corners?

THE LINENOLOGISTS EXPLAIN
You bought a Queen fitted sheet for a Queen bed. So why does it still keep popping off the corners?
It's one of the most frustrating bedding problems β and it's easy to assume the sheet must simply be the wrong size.
But when it comes to fitted sheets, Single, Double, Queen or King is only part of the fit. Mattress depth, toppers, protectors, fitted-sheet wall depth, construction and even how the sheet has been cared for can all influence whether it stays securely on your bed.
Your fitted sheet may not be the wrong size.
It may be the wrong depth.
Width and length determine whether a sheet is Single, Queen or King. Depth determines whether there's enough fabric to travel down the sides of your mattress and secure properly underneath it.
Bed size and mattress depth are two different things
Most of us are familiar with the standard bed-size labels: Single, King Single, Double, Queen, King and Super King.
Those names primarily help identify the width and length of the mattress. But mattresses of the same bed size can have very different depths.
A streamlined mattress and a plush pillow-top mattress might both be Queen size, yet the fitted sheet has to travel considerably further down the sides of the deeper mattress.
Linenologist Tip: Never assume that because the bed size is right, the sheet depth must be right too.
What does fitted-sheet depth actually mean?
You may see fitted-sheet specifications described as wall depth, pocket depth or simply fitted-sheet depth.
This refers to the amount of fabric provided around the sides of the fitted sheet to accommodate the height of the mattress and allow the elasticised edge to sit underneath it.
If there isn't enough depth, the corners can be stretched upwards and outwards under tension. Add movement during the night and one corner can eventually release β followed very quickly by another.
Measure the bed as you actually sleep on it
This is the fitted-sheet measurement mistake we see most often.

THE DEPTH YOUR FITTED SHEET ACTUALLY NEEDS TO ACCOMMODATE
If your mattress is covered by a protector, padded underlay or mattress topper, your fitted sheet has to fit over the entire sleeping surface β not simply the bare mattress underneath.
This is particularly important after buying a new topper. Your mattress hasn't changed size, but the overall height the fitted sheet needs to cover has.
How to measure your mattress depth properly
Make the measurement with your protector, topper or underlay already sitting on the mattress.
STEP 1. Leave your usual protector, topper or underlay on the bed.
STEP 2. Measure vertically from the highest point of your sleeping surface down to the bottom edge of the mattress.
STEP 3. Don't pull the tape tightly around a rounded pillow-top edge. You are trying to establish the real vertical depth.
STEP 4. Compare your measurement with the fitted-sheet dimensions shown in the individual product information.
The fitted sheet needs enough depth to reach down the mattress and secure underneath it β not simply reach the bottom edge.
LINENOLOGIST TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
7 reasons your fitted sheet may keep coming off
1. The fitted sheet isn't deep enough
This is one of the most common causes. When the sheet has to stretch excessively down the sides of the mattress, the elasticised edge has less opportunity to sit securely underneath it.
2. You've added a mattress topper
A topper may only add a few centimetres, but that can be enough to turn a previously comfortable fitted-sheet fit into a very tight one. Remember: the sheet must cover the topper and mattress together.
3. Your mattress has a substantial pillow top
Plush pillow-top and Euro-top mattresses can be significantly deeper than more streamlined mattresses, even though both carry exactly the same Queen or King size label.
4. You're assuming every Queen fitted sheet is identical
They're not. Different brands and ranges can use different fitted-sheet wall depths. Always check the measurements of the individual product rather than relying on the bed-size name alone.
5. The elastic isn't sitting underneath the mattress
The elasticised edge is designed to help secure the sheet beneath the mattress. If the sheet only just reaches the lower edge, movement during sleep can pull the corner upwards.
6. The sheet is actually too loose
More depth isn't automatically better. A very deep fitted sheet on a relatively shallow mattress may leave excess fabric that bunches or shifts. Fit is about matching the sheet to the mattress, not simply choosing the deepest option available.
7. Laundering may have changed the fit
Textile dimensions can change during laundering, particularly if care instructions aren't followed. Always wash and dry your sheets according to the manufacturer's instructions to help maintain their intended size and fit.
Standard, Mega or Deluxe β what's the difference?
Manchester Warehouse carries fitted-sheet options across a range of wall depths. The terminology and exact dimensions can vary between individual brands and products, so always check the Product Information before buying.
STANDARD DEPTH
Commonly around 33β40cm
Often suitable for more conventional mattress depths.
MEGA DEPTH
Around 50cm on selected ranges
Useful for deeper mattresses and many pillow-top configurations.
DELUXE / EXTRA DEEP
Up to around 60cm on selected ranges
Designed for particularly deep mattress and bedding combinations.
Important: these are general examples from sheet depths available across the Manchester Warehouse range. Always check the actual dimensions shown on the individual product you are considering.

Just bought a mattress topper?
Don't be surprised if your old fitted sheets suddenly feel tighter. The topper has effectively increased the height of the sleeping surface.
Re-measure your bed after adding the topper β not before.
EXPLORE MATTRESS TOPPERSDoes the way you put a fitted sheet on matter?
It can.
Start by positioning the sheet correctly on the mattress and make sure you haven't accidentally rotated it. A fitted sheet may appear nearly square when bundled up, but mattresses are generally longer than they are wide.
Fit one end first, pulling each corner fully over the mattress. Then move to the opposite end and secure the remaining corners. Finally, run your hands around the sides to ensure the elasticised edge has moved below the lower mattress edge wherever possible.
If getting the final corner on requires extreme stretching, that's a useful warning sign that the sheet depth or overall size may not be suitable for your bed.
Fitted Sheet FAQs
Does a Queen fitted sheet fit every Queen mattress?
Not necessarily. The width and length may be appropriate, but the mattress depth still needs to suit the fitted-sheet wall depth.
Should I automatically buy the deepest fitted sheet available?
No. Excessively deep sheets can leave too much loose fabric on a shallower mattress. The goal is a secure, appropriate fit β not simply maximum depth.
Does a mattress protector count when measuring depth?
Yes. Measure the bed with the protector, topper and any other layer that normally sits beneath your fitted sheet already in place.
Can washing affect the size of a fitted sheet?
Fabric dimensions can change during laundering. Following the manufacturer's wash and drying instructions is the best way to help maintain the intended fit.
My fitted sheet used to fit until I bought a topper. Why?
Because the topper has increased the overall depth the fitted sheet needs to cover. Re-measure the bed with the topper in place and compare that measurement with your fitted-sheet specifications.
Before replacing your fitted sheets, check these five things
1. Is the sheet the correct Single, Double, Queen or King size?
2. What is the actual depth of your mattress?
3. Have you included your protector, topper or underlay in that measurement?
4. What wall depth does your fitted sheet actually have?
5. Is the elasticised edge sitting properly underneath the mattress?
THE LINENOLOGIST TAKEAWAY
Don't just measure your mattress.
Measure the bed as you actually sleep on it.
When you're choosing a fitted sheet, the familiar bed-size name is only the starting point.
Check the width.
Check the length.
And always check the depth.
